I have decided to build my own Astromech droids based on those portrayed in the Star Wars movies and expanded universe.
Feel free to browse my progress pictures. Eventually I'll get around to adding some text.

HM-R1 "Homer" Hangar Maintennance Droid
"Homer" is one of my first completed Droids.

Built from common items and powered by a LynxMotion tracked chassis modified with upgraded 12v planetary gear motors and a bot board with an AtomPro.

"Homer" took me about 3 months from project start to finish.

"Homer" has been to the Children's Museum and Johnson Space Center for appearances.

I did not keep accurate records, but my best guess is aside from the drive system and robot brain, the rest of "Homer" cost less than $100. However, I opted for a huge battery to keep him powered through events, a 12v 13AH Nimh, and that battery alone was pricey. Find all sorts of batteries at BatterySpace.com.
